DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Kelly Hardy returned an interception for a touchdown and Jamie Wilson rushed for two scores as East Carolina blanked Duke, 38-0, in the season opener for both schools. The Pirates (1-0) evened the series with the Blue Devils, 4-4, and recorded their first shutout since a 31-0 pasting of Tennessee-Chattanooga on September 12, 1998. Hardy provided East Carolina with all the points it would need when he ran back an interception 26 yards for a touchdown 89 seconds into the contest. Wilson scored twice in the second quarter to help the Pirates snap a three-game skid at Wallace Wade Stadium. He had a 15-yard touchdown run early in the quarter and added a three-yard TD plunge with 3:41 remaining. Keith Stokes caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from David Garrard and Art Brown added an eight-yard scoring run in the second half for East Carolina. This was the Pirates last test before hosting Virginia Tech on Thursday in a nationally televised contest. Garrard completed 22-of-29 passes for 264 yards and Stokes had seven receptions for 124 yards for East Carolina. It was the Pirates biggest rout since a 52-7 pounding of Tulane on October 23. Duke (0-1) suffered its second straight 38-0 loss as it was routed by rival North Carolina in last season's finale. The Tar Heels visit Northwestern next Saturday. Spencer Romine completed just 8-of-16 passes for 75 yards for the Blue Devils, who were outgained, 428-140, and converted just 1-of-13 on third down.
