BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Josh Booty threw a pair of touchdown passes during a 21-point second quarter burst as Louisiana State remained undefeated under first-year coach Nick Saban with a 28-13 victory over Houston. Saban, who is in his seventh season as a collegiate coach, guided Michigan State to four bowl games in five years. He became the first LSU coach to win his first game since 1987, when the Tigers posted a 58-0 blanking of Western Carolina last week. The two teams remained in a defensive struggle until the 3:32 mark of the second quarter as Booty broke the scoreless tie when he hooked up with Joe Domingeaux on an 11-yard strike. Less than four minutes later, Booty capped a five-play, 65-yard drive with a 30-yard TD pass to Robert Royal for a 14-0 lead. The Tigers looked to be headed towards another rout when running back LeBrandon Toefield scored from three yards out for a commanding 21-0 advantage with 5:47 remaining in the half. After holding LSU (2-0) in check through a scoreless third period, Houston (0-2) waited until early in the fourth to mount its rally. Brandon Middleton scored on a pair of touchdown strikes from Jason McKinley, cutting the deficit to 21-13 with 10:55 left. But the Cougars' comeback fell short as McKinley's pass was intercepted by Damien James and returned 56 yards for a TD and a 28-13 lead with just 25 seconds remaining. Also in his first season, Dana Dimel is winless in his first two tries with Houston after posting a 23-12 mark over three seasons at Wyoming. Tonight's victory gives the Tigers a slim 2-1 edge in the all-time series.
