EVANSTON, Illinois (Ticker) -- In only his second year as coach at Northwestern, Randy Walker has been able to do something that no one, not even Gary Barnett, has done in a quarter-century -- open a season with two wins. The Wildcats rolled to a 38-5 victory over Duke as Damien Anderson rushed for a career-high 187 yards and two long touchdowns and All-America candidate Kevin Bentley recorded two of his team's six sacks. Northwestern had not opened a season 2-0 since 1975, when it finished 3-8 under coach John Pont. During their Rose Bowl campaign of 1995, the Wildcats split their first two games before running off nine straight wins. Anderson, who carried 21 times, put Northwestern (2-0) ahead for good, 7-2, with just under five minutes left in the first quarter when he broke off a 56-yard run. Tim Long added a 35-yard field goal and Zak Kustok threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Sam Simmons to stretch the lead to 17-2. Brent Garber kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Blue Devils (0-2) to trim the halftime deficit to 12 points, but the Wildcats dominated the third quarter. Kustok threw a nine-yard TD toss to freshman Kunle Patrick before Kevin Lawrence scored on an eight-yard run. Anderson raced 66 yards to cap the scoring in the opening minute of the final period. Kustok completed 16-of-27 passes for 197 yards and two scores as Northwestern overcame 15 penalties totaling 135 yards. The Wildcats outgained the Blue Devils, 472 yards to 174. Duke's Spencer Romine was 6-of-18 for 98 yards with two interceptions and was sacked five times.
