COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Ticker) -- South Carolina's turnaround under coach Lou Holtz took another step in the right direction.

After an 0-11 finish last season, South Carolina is now off to its best start in 10 years after compiling 576 total yards in a 41-6 rout of Eastern Michigan.

Brought in to resurrect an ailing program, Holtz has helped his team rebound after not winning a game in his first season.

The Gamecocks outscored the Eagles, 24-0, in the second quarter to put the contest away. Derek Watson rushed for two touchdowns, Andrew Pinnock added an 11-yard TD run and Reid Bethea booted a 22-yard field goal.

Watson added a third touchdown run in the third quarter and finished with 20 carries for a career-high 215 yards. Trevin Smith added an 80-yard TD run late in the contest for South Carolina, which hosts Mississippi State next week.

Phil Petty completed 19-of-30 passes for 240 yards for South Carolina, which was playing Eastern Michigan for the first time.

James Adkisson added eight receptions for 100 yards.

Walter Church completed 17-of-27 passes for 11 yards for the Eagles (1-2), who gained 192 yards in their first game against a Southeastern Conference school. Kenny Christian had nine receptions for 72 yards.

Tollner Starnes booted a pair of field goals for Eastern Michigan.
