GREENVILLE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Garrard ignored the heavy rain and threw three long touchdown passes to lead East Carolina to a 34-17 victory over Syracuse. Garrard hooked up with Marcellus Harris on second-quarter TDs of 46 and 65 and yards and hit tight end Rashon Burns with a 33-yard strike to cap the scoring with 10:22 left in the final period. But it was a blocked punt that sparked the Pirates (3-1), who avenged 1997's 56-0 loss to the Orangemen (1-2). With Syracuse holding a 10-3 lead after dominating the game's first 19 1/2 minutes, cornerback Travis Heath broke through the line to block Mike Shafer's kick. Wide receiver Terrance Copper recovered in the end zone to tie the score. On the third play of the ensuing drove, cornerback Jerome Steward picked off Nunes, setting up Garrard's first TD pass of the day. The Orangemen punted on their next drive, and Garrard hit Harris down the left sideline to give East Carolina a 24-10 lead. The Pirates' 17-point explosion took just 6:53 and demoralized the Orangemen, who were unable to mount a comeback despite racking up 247 yards on the ground. Syracuse turned the ball over on downs in East Carolina territory three times in the fourth quarter. Kevin Miller's second field goal of the game, a 24-yarder with less than two minutes left in the third quarter, put the Pirates on top, 27-17. Garrard completed 8-of-15 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns without being intercepted. His counterpart, Nunes, was 10-of-18 for 158 yards with two interceptions and was knocked around, suffering a bruised hip late in the contest. James Mungro accumulated 106 yards on 10 carries for Syracuse, which still leads the all-time series, 6-3.
