MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Sugar Sanders and quarterback Scott Scherer ran for first-quarter touchdowns as Memphis held on for a 17-10 victory over East Carolina in a Conference USA game.

Sanders, who rushed for a career-high 144 yards, scored from four yards out with 11:17 left in the opening period and Scherer found the end zone with a six-yard scamper just over three minutes later.

Scherer, the son of Tigers' coach Rip, completed 18-of-25 passes for 175 yards and rushed for 40 more.

Bunkie Perkins caught six passes for 85 yards for Memphis (4-2, 2-1 C-USA), which won for only the third time in 10 meetings with East Carolina.

A 20-yard field goal by Ryan White provided a 17-0 lead in the final minute of the quarter but the Tigers failed to score the rest of the way, allowing East Carolina time to adjust.

The shellshocked East Carolina defense did recover but the Pirates were unable to sustain any momemtum on offense over the first three quarters.

Pirates quarterback David Garrard passed for 246 yards but was under near constant pressure from the Tigers' swarming defense. Garrard completed only 18-of-41 attempts, threw two interceptions and was sacked three times.

Garrard finally got East Carolina (3-2, 1-1) on the scoreboard with 11:13 remaining in the contest, capping a four-play, 40-yard drive with a 16-yard completion to Rashon Burns.
