SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) -- Matt LoVecchio is the latest Notre Dame quarterback to find success in his debut, throwing for a pair of touchdowns in a 20-14 win over Stanford. A true freshman from New Jersey, LoVecchio became the third different starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish this season, joining the injured Arnaz Battle and Gary Godsey. LoVecchio is the 12th Notre Dame quarterback in 13 tries to win in his first game as a starter after completing 10-of-18 passes for 100 yards and rushing for 36 yards on 13 carries. Both of the TD passes went to David Givens, who caught balls of 17 and eight yards to give the Fighting Irish (3-2) a 13-0 halftime lead. Givens became the first Notre Dame receiver with two TD catches in a game since Derrick Mayes in the 1996 Orange Bowl against Florida State. The second TD followed a blocked punt by that was recovered at the Stanford 10. The Cardinal (2-2) cut the deficit to 13-7 when Chris Lewis threw a 13-yard TD pass to DeRonnie Pitts. Lewis completed 19-of-43 passes for 242 yards. Notre Dame extended its lead to 20-7 on a seven-yard run by Julius Jones. Lewis threw a 14-yard TD pass to Darin Naatjes with 1:07 left, but Notre Dame recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the win. Notre Dame exacted revenge for a 40-37 season-ending loss in 1999 and leads the all-time series, 10-5.
