TULSA, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Rocky Perez completed 16-of-21 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns as Texas-El Paso won its third straight game and took over first place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 40-7 win over Tulsa. Perez has thrown for over 200 yards in each of his last five contests and took control in the opening quarter, when he threw for two scores. The latter was a 12-yard strike to Joey Knapp as the Miners (4-2, 3-0 WAC) opened a 14-0 lead. Ricky Bishop booted two field goals as UTEP gained a 20-point cushion before Sherman Austin raced for a 69-yard touchdown run. Perez added a one-yard TD plunge and threw an 15-yard scoring pass to Knapp in the third quarter for a 40-0 cushion. Austin finished with 12 carries for 131 yards for the Miners, who gained a convincing 264-6 advantage in rushing yards. Lee Mays had six receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown to help UTEP win for the second time in its last three meetings against the Golden Hurricanes (3-3, 2-1). Tulsa's defense had not allowed a first-half touchdown in its last three games prior to tonight and had its three-game winning streak snapped. Josh Blankenship completed 12-of-24 passes for 145 yards and two interceptions for Tulsa, which was outgained, 468-243. Donald Shoals had six receptions for 80 yards and Ken Bohanon added a four-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
