EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) -- Rocky Perez threw for 212 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score as Texas-El Paso posted its fifth straight victory, 23-13 over Fresno State in a Western Athletic Conference matchup. Perez completed 20-of-29 passes, including a 24-yard TD to Lee Mays 3 1/2 minutes into the game before staking Texas-El Paso (6-2, 5-0 WAC) to a 14-0 lead less than six minutes later with a four-yard scamper. Perez has thrown for at least 200 yards in each of UTEP's last seven games, including a 280-yard, three-TD effort in last week's 47-30 romp over San Jose State. After Perez's heroics, the Miners' defense came up with a big play by recording a safety with 2:24 left before halftime that pushed the lead to 16-0. Chris Porter added to the advantage with a nine-yard run early in the third quarter. Fresno State (3-3, 2-1) trimmed the deficit to 10 points on quarterback David Carr's 27-yard run and five-yard toss to Charles Smith but could not get closer. Carr was 14-of-31 for 142 yards and threw his only interception in the fourth quarter after the Bulldogs reached the UTEP 26. Fresno State had a three-game winning streak stopped and lost for the first time since a 24-21 setback to nationally ranked UCLA on September 9. The Miners had been 0-7-1 in the last eight meetings with the Bulldogs, including a heartbreaking 24-23 overtime setback at Fresno State on October 23, 1999. Their only other win in the series came in the first-ever meeting in 1938.
