Pac-10

PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- Marques Tuiasosopo's legs were more than enough to overcome Drew Brees' arm.

Tuiasosopo combined precision passing with running an effective option attack as fourth-ranked Washington continued its mastery of No. 14 Purdue with a 34-24 victory in the Rose Bowl.

A double threat as a passer and runner, Tuiasosopo was the Pac-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year. But he came into this game with not nearly the attention afforded Brees, a Heisman Trophy finalist who led Purdue to its first Rose Bowl berth in 34 years.

For at least one day, Tuiasosopo changed that perception as he ran the offense to near perfection. As the point man on the option, he had 75 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. When he dropped back, he completed 16-of-22 passes for 138 yards and a score.

With the Boilermakers keying on Tuiasosopo, the Huskies piled up huge chunks of yardage on the ground. Freshman Rick Alexis ran for 78 yards on 10 carries. Third-stringer Willie Hurst had 53 yards and a TD on nine rushes. Fullback Pat Conniff had 45 yards on eight carries and Braxton Cleman banged in for a TD.

In all, Washington outrushed Purdue, 268-76, as it completed a stellar 11-1 season and won "The Granddaddy of Them All" for the seventh time and first since 1992.

The Huskies have wins over Miami, Oregon State and Purdue but are not in the national championship hunt. Their lone loss came to Oregon, which won 10 games and beat Texas in the Holiday Bowl.

In his final college game, Brees was 23-of-39 for 275 yards and two touchdowns. But he could not end the hex Washington holds over Purdue, which lost its seventh straight in the series.

The Boilermakers' only other appearance in the Rose Bowl was a 14-13 win over Southern California in 1967.
