BOULDER, Colorado (Ticker) -- David Carr threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Devon Banks had a big interception as Fresno State held on to defeat Colorado for the first time, 24-22. In the Jim Thorpe Association Classic and the season opener for both schools, Fresno State opened a 21-7 lead and hung on in the second half. Colorado has lost three straight season openers for the first time since 1982-84. Colorado rallied behind Craig Ochs, who completed 31-of-51 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns. His 16-yard scoring toss to John Minardi with 7:51 to play pulled the Buffaloes within two points but the conversion failed. After Colorado forced a punt, Ochs drove the Buffaloes to a 1st-and-goal. But on second down, he rolled right and forced a pass into coverage that Banks, a senior cornerback, corraled in the end zone. The Buffs forced another punt that Roman Hollowell fielded on his 1 and returned only five yards. With just 72 seconds and no timeouts, Ochs could move the offense just 29 yards. Hollowell returned one punt 77 yards for a score in the second quarter and another 36 yards to set up a 42-yard field goal by Pat Brougham in the third quarter that made it 21-16. Carr was 21-of-36 for 198 yards. He ran one yard for a TD to open the scoring 6:23 into the contest and threw a 21-yard TD pass to Marque Davis with 1:58 left in the first half, making it 21-7. Davis caught eight passes for 95 yards. The one-yard TD runs by Carr and Paris Gaines in the opening quarter were set up by fumbles by Colorado tailback Chris Brown and Ochs, respectively. The Bulldogs forced four turnovers and committed none, helping them overcome a 412-287 deficit in total yards and 13 penalties. Fresno State was 0-4 all-time against Colorado and 0-8 vs. teams from the Big 12 Conference. Ochs began the comeback with 56 seconds left in the first half with an eight-yard TD pass to Minardi, who caught five passes for 35 yards.
