NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Dwone Hicks and quarterback Wes Counts ran for second-half touchdowns as Middle Tennessee defeated intrastate rival Vanderbilt for the first time, 37-28.

Hicks capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive with a two-yard burst to put Middle Tennessee (1-0) ahead, 30-28, with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter.

Counts had a nine-yard scamper with 21 seconds to play as the Blue Raiders won for the first time in 13 all-time meetings with Vanderbilt.

The schools, which are just 25 miles apart, were playing for the first time since 1956.

Hicks rushed 37 times for 203 yards, his second-highest total but 108 yards short of the school record he set in a 49-21 win over Louisiana Tech last October 7. Hicks had a pair of one-yard TDs in the opening quarter to give the Blue Raiders a 14-0 lead.

Counts completed 27-of-36 passes for 308 yards as Middle Tennessee won a season-opening game on the road for the first time since 1994 at Tennessee State.

Greg Zolman was 13-of-32 for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Vanderbilt (0-1), which scored all its points in the second quarter.

Rodney Williams rushed 12 times for 60 yards. His three-yard TD run pulled the Commodores within 14-7 just 10 seconds into the second quarter. Lew Thomas had a 26-yard scamper to tie the score, 14-14, with 7:54 left in the half. Thomas gained 71 yards on seven carries.

The Blue Raiders regained the lead when Brian Kelly kicked a 22-yard field goal with 5:05 left in the second quarter. Zolman tossed a 48-yard pass to Dan Stricker to give the Commodores a 21-17 edge with 2:49 before halftime.

Hicks capped a seven-play, 76-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to put the Blue Raiders ahead, 24-21, 54 seconds before the half. After throwing one incomplete pass, Zolman hooked up with M.J. Garrett on a 73-yard scoring play and the Commodores took a 28-24 lead into the locker room.
