CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- William Green got his junior season off to a flying start.

Green rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries as Boston College pulled away for a 34-10 Big East Conference victory over West Virginia in the season opener for both teams.

It was the third career 200-yard game for Green, the Big East's second-leading rusher last season. He ran for 225 yards against Connecticut and 223 yards against Rutgers in 2000.

The loss spoiled the debut of West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez, who took over for Don Nehlen, the winningest coach in West Virginia history. Nehlen retired after posting a 149-93-4 record in 21 seasons at the school.

The Eagles (1-0) spotted West Virginia a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on Brenden Rauh's 41-yard field goal and Avon Cobourne's one-yard touchdown run. But Boston College pulled even on Green's two-yard TD run with 6:54 left in the second quarter and took a 13-10 halftime lead on Kevin McMyler's 33-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining.

Boston College scored on its first three possessions of the second half. After a missed field goal by Rauh, Green ripped off a 67-yard TD run on the first play of the ensuing drive to give the Eagles a 20-10 lead four minutes into the third period.

The Mountaineers again marched into Boston College territory on the following possession, but Rauh missed another field goal. The Eagles took advantage with an 80-yard, seven-play drive, capped by Green's one-yard TD run with 3:33 left in the third.

Boston College clinched the victory on Brian St. Pierre's 33-yard TD pass to Dedrick Dewalt 14 seconds into the final period. St. Pierre completed just 11-of-26 for 146 yards with an interception.

Brad Lewis completed 17-of-33 for 183 yards and two interceptions for the Mountaineers, who were held to only 76 yards on the ground. Cobourne passed West Virginia on the ground with 62 yards on 19 carries.
