BERKELEY, California (Ticker) -- Kurt Kittner threw for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Antoineo Harris ran for three scores as Illinois pasted California, 44-17, in the opener for both squads.

Kittner, who was nominated for his second straight Davey O'Brien Award as the top quarterback in the country, completed 18-of-34 passes, including scoring strikes 2 1/2 minutes apart late in the second quarter.

Both touchdown passes were to sophomore receiver Brandon Lloyd, who hauled in eight receptions for 178 yards. Kittner's 18 completions gave him 485 in his career and moved him past Jeff George into fourth place on the school's all-time list.

With Rocky Harvey struggling, Harris got the majority of carries and scored on runs of one, two and seven yards. He finished with 65 yards on 20 carries.

Illinois (1-0), which improved to 7-1 in the all-time series, led 38-7, at the half and cruised thereafter.

Joe Igber was one of the few bright spots for California (0-1), carrying 21 times for 116 yards and a pair of scores. The junior running back moved past Anthony Wallace, Chris Richards and Jack Jensen into eighth place on the school's all-time rushing list with 1,711 yards.

Bears quarterback Kyle Boller completed 17-of-29 passes for 184 yards, but was sacked three times and intercepted once.

California will host Brigham Young next Saturday while Illinois faces Northern Illinois the same day.
