GREENVILLE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Wake Forest gave coach Jim Grobe a win in his debut as it stopped David Garrard short of the goal line on a two-point rushing attempt with 3:48 to play, preserving a 21-19 upset of East Carolina. Garrard scored on a 10-yard run that capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive and brought the Pirates (0-1) within two. After the quarterback was stopped, East Carolina elected to kick deep instead of going for the onside kick. Wake Forest (1-0) ran out the clock by converting two first downs. One of four new coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Grobe posted a 33-33-1 record in six seasons at Ohio University. Tarence Williams rushed for 162 yards on 35 carries, including a one-yard TD run in the second quarter that gave the Demon Deacons a 15-0 lead. East Carolina got within to 15-7 on Leonard Henry's eight-yard TD run with 17 seconds left in the first half and closed to 15-13 on Garrard's 49-yard TD pass to Torey Morris with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter. The two-point conversion failed. Anthony Young completed only 5-of-9 passes for 87 yards but connected with Jax Landfried for a 44-yard TD that gave the Deacons a 21-13 lead with 7:22 remaining. Garrard was 18-of-35 for 231 yards but was intercepted twice. Henry paced the Pirates on the ground with just 44 yards on 11 carries. In its 100th season, Wake Forest improved to 48-49-3 in openers.
