ATLANTA (Ticker) -- George Godsey passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns and Joe Burns rushed for two more as No. 14 Georgia Tech rolled to a 35-7 victory over The Citadel.

Godsey completed 14-of-16 passes, including a 40-yard touchdown to Jonathan Smith and a 13-yard score to Kerry Watkins.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0) defeated the Bulldogs for the 10th time in as many meetings and have outscored them, 411-51, including four shutouts.

Mazzie Drummond of The Citadel passed for just 129 yards and was sacked three times, but provided the lone score for the Bulldogs with a two-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Georgia Tech, which was sluggish in a 13-7 victory over Syracuse last week, got on the board just 1:17 into the game when Burns scored on a one-yard run.

"We knew coming into this game, we needed to step it up," Burns said. "We got the ball rolling from the very first series."

After The Citadel punted on its first possession, the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 44. Four plays later, Godsey hit Smith to make it 14-0.

"I think it was important for us to take control right from the start of the game," Godsey said. "We were playing a team that athlete-for-athlete does not match up well with us. In a situation like that, you want to prove your point right from the start."

Georgia Tech led, 21-0, after the first quarter and Burns added to the lead on a seven-yard TD run in the second period. It was Burns' 20th career rushing touchdown and 22nd overall, moving him into a tie for sixth place on the school's all-time list with Leon Hardeman (1951-53).

The Yellow Jackets made it 35-0 on Jimmy Dixon's one-yard TD run 4:54 into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs avoided the shutout when Drummond capped a 10-play, 75-yard by scoring on a two-yard keeper with 4:45 remaining.

"Overall, I think Mazzie handled things well," Citadel coach Ellis Johnson said. "There are a lot of areas we can get better in."

Georgia Tech held The Citadel to 202 total yards, the fewest allowed by the Yellow Jackets since they gave up 194 in the 1995 season opener against Furman.

"The first (team) defense made plays when they had to," Georgia Tech coach George O'Leary said. "I thought it was a good win."

The Yellow Jackets have now won 16 of their last 18 home games, losing only to Florida State in 1998 and 2000.

"This is a tough environment to play in," Johnson said. "I think Tech was very underrated after that first ballgame but we knew they were a good football team."
