IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Aaron Greving scored three touchdowns and Ladell Betts rushed for 99 yards as Iowa coasted to a 51-0 victory over Kent State in the season opener for both teams.

Greving scored on a 14-yard run in the second period and added TD runs of one and 26 yards in the third quarter -- his only carries of the game -- for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who were in control throughout.

Iowa opened a 10-0 lead in the first period on Jeremy Allen's 14-yard TD scamper and Nate Keeding's 37-yard field goal and stretched its advantage to 23-0 at the half.

The Hawkeyes wore down the Golden Flashes (0-1) with an effective ground attack, outrushing them by a 331-113 margin. Iowa held a 567-203 advantage in total yards.

Kyle McCann completed 12-of-18 for 165 yards for the Hawkeyes, who improved to 80-31-2 in season openers.

Chante Murphy paced Kent State on the ground with just 30 yards on six carries. Jeff Valentino completed only 3-of-13 passes for 35 yards and an interception before being benched. The Golden Flashes were limited to a net of 90 yards passing.

Betts, who ran for 1,090 yards last season, needs only 253 yards to pass Tavian Banks (2,977) and move into second place on Iowa's all-time rushing list.

Kent State suffered its sixth straight loss.
