BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- LaBrandon Toefield ran for three touchdowns as 16th-ranked Louisiana State used a dominant ground attack to open its season with a 48-17 romp over Tulane. Toefield carried 15 times for 58 yards and Louisiana State (1-0) amassed 232 rushing yards and defeated Tulane for the 14th straight time. Toefield wasted no time in exciting the crowd of 91,782 as he raced 28 yards on LSU's first play from scrimmage for a 7-0 lead 26 seconds into the game. Toefield had a three-yard run to increase the lead to 31-10 with 3:56 left in the third quarter and his one-yard plunge capped the scoring early in the fourth. Rohan Davey completed 19-of-29 passes for 253 yards and a pair of TDs for the Tigers, who are 65-22-7 all-time against Tulane. Patrick Ramsey completed 25-of-47 passes for 343 yards and a two touchdowns for Tulane (0-2), which was routed 70-35 by Brigham Young in the Black Coaches Association Classic last week. Seth Marler kicked a 26-yard field goal with 4:51 to trim the deficit to 7-3. But LSU answered on its next possession as Davey threw a 16-yard pass to Robert Royal to make it 14-3 just six seconds into the second quarter. Tulane got within 17-10 when Roydell Williams caught a 26-yard pass from Ramsey with 7:16 remaining in the second. LSU went 76 yards in three plays as Domanick Davis had a three-yard burst to push the margin to 24-10. The Tigers took a 34-10 lead into the locker room as John Corbello kicked a 32-yard field goal 31 seconds before halftime. Davey opened the second half with a three-yard scoring pass to Eric Edwards. Ramsey found Zander Robinson for a six-yard TD with 6:17 left in the third for Tulane's final score.
