COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Shaun Hill tossed a pair of touchdown passes as Maryland posted a 23-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over North Carolina in Ralph Friedgen's debut as coach. Hill completed only 10-of-26 for 86 yards, but tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jafar Williams in the second quarter and a five-yard TD strike to Scooter Monroe in the fourth period. The Terrapins only led, 9-7, at the half, but broke the game open with a pair of touchdowns in the final period. Hill's TD pass to Monroe gave Maryland a 16-7 lead with 13:19 remaining before Marc Riley, who rushed for 116 yards on 21 carries, put away the contest with a one-yard TD run with 6:35 to play. The Tar Heels got their only touchdown just 1:48 into the game on a 77-yard scamper by Willie Parker, who gained 102 yards on 13 carries. Maryland (1-0, 1-0 ACC) tied the contest on Hill's TD pass to Williams with 6:33 left in the first period and took a two-point halftime lead on a safety with 11:43 left in the second quarter. Darian Durant and Ronald Curry combined to complete 16-of-26 for 158 yards for the Tar Heels, but were intercepted three times. An assistant at Georgia Tech for the past four seasons, Friedgen took over for Ron Vanderlinden, who posted a four-year record of 15-29. Maryland beat North Carolina for just the third time in the last 11 and cut the Tar Heels' lead in the all-time series to 35-28-1. North Carolina (0-2, 0-1), which lost to defending national champion Oklahoma last week, still seeks its first win under new coach John Bunting.
