HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Jeff Kelly threw for 277 yards and a score and Southern Mississippi spoiled the debut of Les Miles as Oklahoma State coach with a 17-9 victory.

Miles took over for Bob Simmons and drew a difficult assignment in his debut, facing a team that has made four straight bowl appearances. Southern Misssippi sent him to defeat by scoring all of its points in the first half.

Kelly, who completed 22-of-36 passes without an interception, put the Golden Eagles ahead to stay at 7-3 with a 20-yard scoring strike to Kenneth Johnson late in the first quarter.

Southern Mississippi (1-0) added to its lead early in the second quarter on a one-yard TD run by Dwayne Woods, who carried 25 times for 70 yards.

Brant Hanna kicked a 23-yard field goal to increase the halftime lead to 17-6.

Luke Phillips accounted for all of the Oklahoma State scoring with field goals of 41, 25 and 32 yards.

Aso Pogi had a strong game for Oklahoma State, completing 26-of-28 passes for 294 yards, but he was sacked five times for 42 yards in losses.

The Cowboys drove to the Southern Mississippi 26 late in the fourth quarter, but Pogi's pass on 4th-and-4 went through the hands of Rashaun Woods with 1:03 remaining.

The Golden Eagles allowed just 45 rushing yards on 28 carries.
