COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- Mark Farris ran for two scores and threw for another as Texas A&M scored the final 28 points to rally for a 38-24 victory over McNeese State in the season opener for both teams. McNeese State (0-1) jumped to a 16-0 lead and took a 24-10 lead on a six-yard touchdown pass from Slade Nagle to Jeff Hamilton with just over 12 minutes left in the third quarter. But Farris marched the Aggies 77 yards in eight plays in just 2:37, capped by his 11-yard touchdown run, to reduce the deficit to seven points. Defensive back Sammy Davis intercepted a pass from Nagle and returned the ball to the Cowboys' 16. Farris then hooked up with Terrence Murphy on the next play for a 24-24 tie with 5:27 to go in the third. Farris later capped a 10-play, 68-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to give Texas A&M (1-0) the lead for good with 12:21 left. The Aggies wrapped up the victory when linebacker Christian Rodriguez intercepted Nagle and ran in for a score from 11 yards out with 4:42 remaining. Farris was 24-of-40 for 254 yards and the one touchdown. The Cowboys scored twice on turnovers for a 16-0 lead. Farris fumbled on a sack and linebacker Brad Archie ran it in from 55 yards out for a 6-0 lead. Safety Joe Judge returned an interception by Farris 22 yards for a touchdown and a 16-0 lead with 9:27 remaining before halftime. Joe Weber's one-yard touchdown plunge got the Aggies on the board and Cody Scates booted a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to slice the deficit to six points. Texas A&M improved to 27-0 against non-conference opponents at home under coach R.C. Slocum, a 1967 graduate of McNeese State.
