LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Sultan McCullough almost single-handedly made Pete Carroll's coaching debut at Southern California a success. McCullough rushed for three touchdowns and a career-high 172 yards on 25 carries as the Trojans held off stubborn San Jose State, 21-10, in the season opener for both teams. McCullough scored on TD runs of 14 and 35 yards in the first quarter to give the Trojans (1-0) a 14-0 lead, then added a seven-yard TD three minutes into the final period to make it 21-3. His previous career best was 136 yards in last season's 34-24 victory over San Jose State (0-1), which also has a new coach in Fitz Hill. The Spartans got on the board on Nick Gilliam's 37-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and closed to 21-10 on Deonce Whitaker's three-yard TD scamper with six minutes to play. Carson Palmer completed 21-of-28 for 213 yards with an interception for the Trojans, who finished last in the Pac-10 Conference last season for the first time in school history, leading to the firing of Paul Hackett. Carroll took over at USC after leading the New England Patriots to playoffs in two of his three seasons. Marcus Arroyo completed 20-of-37 passes for 213 yards for the Spartans, but was intercepted twice. Whitaker paced San Jose State on the ground with 65 yards on 22 carries.
