SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Adam Tate and Marty Johnson ran for touchdowns as Utah posted a 23-19 victory over intrastate rival Utah State in the season opener for both teams. Tate capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive 10 seconds into the second quarter with a seven-yard run, giving Utah a 7-3 lead. A senior, Tate carried 15 times for 76 yards. Johnson got involved later in the second quarter, scoring on a four-yard run to extend the lead to 14-6. Johnson gained 95 yards on six attempts, busting off a long run of 67 yards. Ryan Kaneshiro kicked field goals of 21 and 33 yards in the final 24 seconds of the half, giving the Utes (1-0) a 20-6 cushion. He also connected from 32 yards in the third quarter. The Aggies (0-1) attempted to make things interesting in the fourth quarter as Jose Fuentes threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Curtis and Roger Fernandez scored on a 64-yard punt return. Fuentes went 23-of-43 for 231 yards and three interceptions. Utah improved to 69-28-4 in the all-time series.
