CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Billy McMullen caught a pair of one-yard touchdown passes and Virginia benefited from a missed extra point in the fourth quarter to edge stubborn Richmond, 17-16. The Cavaliers forced turnovers on Richmond's final two possessions to preserve the first win for coach Al Groh, who lost in his debut last week against Wisconsin. Claude Diggs scored on a five-yard touchdown run to pull Richmond within one with 8:50 remaining, but Doug Kirchner's extra-point attempt failed. Arlen Harris started in place of Virginia star tailback Antwoine Womack and carried 24 times for 99 yards. Womack suffered a high ankle sprain in last week's defeat and will be out seven-to-nine weeks. The Cavaliers also received a strong effort from Bryson Spinner, who completed 20-of-29 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. Virginia (1-1) opened the scoring when McMullen caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Matt Schaub with eight seconds left in the first half. McMullen scored on a one-yard toss from Spinner in the third quarter and David Greene added a 36-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead. Richmond (0-1) did not quit and cut the deficit to 10 points on a 46-yard touchdown run by Cordell Roane with 1:49 left in the third quarter. A 30-yard field goal by Kirchner pulled the Spiders within seven and Virginia's Tavon Mason fumbled on the next possesion, giving Richmond the ball at the Cavaliers 2 and setting up Diggs' touchdown.
