AUBURN, Alabama (Ticker) -- Auburn put the ball in the hands of Casinious Moore and Ronnie Brown, which kept it out of the hands of Eli Manning.

Moore and Brown led an effective ground game that helped run out the clock and deny Manning a chance at a miracle comeback as the Tigers edged Mississippi, 27-21, in the Southeastern Conference opener for both schools.

Moore, a sophomore with 111 career rushing yards, carried 16 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns. Brown, a redshirt freshman who scored in his first game last week against Ball State, had 84 yards on 25 carries.

The young duo helped Auburn (2-0, 1-0 SEC West) build a 27-0 lead late in the third quarter before Manning -- the son of Ole Miss all-time great Archie Manning -- engineered a comeback that fell just short.

Manning completed 24-of-39 passes for 265 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He directed three TD drives of 80-plus yards that cut the deficit to 27-21 with 4:41 to play.

But Manning never took another snap. Using Moore and Brown, Auburn ran six plays before being forced to punt. The Rebels (1-1, 0-1) roughed the punter in the final minute, giving the Tigers another first down that enabled them to kill the clock.

Manning threw a school-record five touchdown passes in last week's 49-14 victory over Murray State.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who previously coached Ole Miss, improved to 2-1 against his former team. The Rebels have lost eight of nine and 17 of 19 in the all-time series, which dates to 1928.

After a scoreless first quarter, Auburn got field goals of 36 and 25 yards and Moore's 11-yard TD run in the second period. The last two scores were set up by turnovers.

Manning's fumble early in the third quarter led to a two-yard plunge by Moore that made it 20-0. He added a 26-yard scoring jaunt with 7:18 left in the third period.

Ole Miss did not cross midfield on its first 10 possessions but Manning got the Rebels untracked. He threw a 50-yard TD pass to Omar Rayford between scoring runs by Robert Williams and Charles Stackhouse.

Auburn's Jason Campbell was 15-of-19 for 142 yards but threw an end-zone interception in the first quarter.

Jamie Armstrong had nine catches for 108 yards and Rayford added four for 88 for Ole Miss.
