CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Twenty years later, Clemson again found a sparring partner in Wofford. Woodrow Dantzler threw for a pair of touchdown passes to J.J. McKelvey and 19th-ranked Clemson scored 17 second-quarter points in the first 5:19 of the period to defeat Wofford, 38-14. Clemson was looking for an opponent this season after Tulane backed out of a game. Wofford, a Division I-AA school, came to the Tigers' aid as a late addition to the schedule. During its national title season of 1981, Clemson was in search of a game after Villanova dropped football in April of that year. The Terriers, then an NAIA school, stepped in and dropped a 45-10 decision. Dantzler carried 13 times for 55 yards and completed 21-of-30 passes for 207 yards with an interception. Wooford (0-1) held a 3-0 lead after the first quarter 20 years ago, and surprisingly, held a 14-7 advantage after the first stanza on Saturday. Wofford jumped in front on a 26-yard TD run by Jessie McCoy before the Tigers tied it on a seven-yard TD pass from Dantzler to McKelvey. The Terriers regained the lead with 2:24 left in the quarter on a 14-yard TD pass from Travis Wilson to Isaac Goodpaster. Clemson exploded for 17 points in the second quarter. After Aaron Hunt kicked a 43-yard field goal, safety Eric Meekins returned a fumble 29 yards for a score to put the Tigers in front to stay, 17-14. Less than four minutes later, Travis Zachery scored on a one-yard run to make 21-14 at halftime. McKelvey caught a seven-yard TD pass from Dantzler in the third quarter. The only score of the fourth quarter was a three-yard TD run by Bernard Rambert.
