MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- A legacy helped get Minnesota back on track. Freshman Marion Barber III rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in his first college start, leading Minnesota to a 44-14 rout of Louisiana-Lafayette. The son of former All-Big Ten running back Marion Barber Jr., Barber carried 26 times and scored on runs of nine and two yards in the second quarter to help the Golden Gophers (1-1) build a 17-0 lead. Barber led a potent ground game for Minnesota, which rolled up 331 rushing yards and held the ball for nearly 33 minutes. Tellis Redmon added 95 yards on 14 carries and freshman Terry Jackson had 51 and a touchdown on 13 rushes. The Golden Gophers bounced back from a season-opening 38-7 loss at Toledo and held Louisiana-Lafayette to 156 total yards, including 30 on the ground. The Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) got on the board in the second quarter as linebacker Ricky Calais returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown. After Dan Nystrom kicked a pair of field goals for Minnesota, Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Henderson and caught a two-yard TD toss from Ron Johnson. Jon Van Cleave was 18-of-35 for just 126 yards for UL-Lafayette, which was facing a Big Ten Conference foe for the first time.
