COLUMBIA, Missouri (Ticker) -- Zack Abron ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns and Missouri had a huge effort from its defense in a 40-6 rout of Division I-AA Southwest Texas State. Abron carried 22 times, including a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a four-yarder in the second period that gave the Tigers a 16-0 lead. In between, Missouri (1-1) had the first of two safeties that set a tone for the game. The Tigers also scored on a blocked punt return, blocked the extra point after Southwest Texas State's lone score and limited the Bobcats to 116 yards. It added up to the first win for new coach Gary Pinkel, whose squad was coming off an embarrassing 20-13 home loss to Bowling Green in its season opener. Four plays after Abron's first score, Marvin McCurry mishandled a punt snap. Missouri's David Monroe, picked it up, ran it 10 yards to the 1 and lost it. McCurry recovered in the end zone and was tackled for a safety. After Abron's second score, Justin Gage caught an eight-yard TD pass from Kirk Farmer for a 24-0 lead with 8:31 to play in the second quarter. With just over two minutes remaining in the half, Missouri had another safety. This time, tailback Lee Davis was tackled in the end zone by Cedric Hardin. Missouri led 33-6 in the fourth quarter when Michael Harden blocked McCurry's punt. Gage picked it up and scooted 18 yards to cap the scoring. Farmer and Darius Outlaw split time at quarterback. Farmer completed 5-of-12 passes for 46 yards and Outlaw was 7-of-13 for 45 yards. Davis had 52 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for Southwest Texas State (1-1), which is 19th in the Division I-AA poll.
