SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- James Mungro rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns as Syracuse avoided its first 0-3 start in 15 years with a 21-10 victory over Central Florida. Mungro accounted for the only TDs of the second half, scoring from two yards with 6:58 left in the third quarter and from 16 yards 80 seconds into the fourth. Fullback Chris Davis also had a rushing touchdown for Syracuse (1-2), which had not lost its first three games since starting the 1986 season 0-4. The Orangemen opened their home schedule with just their ninth win in their last 20 games overall. They began 2001 with a 13-7 loss to Georgia Tech and a 33-9 drubbing at Tennessee. Facing one of the Big East Conference's best teams over the past 10 years, Central Florida fell to 0-2 for the third time in six seasons since moving from Division I-AA to I-A. The Golden Knights took their only lead of the game, 10-7, with no time left in the first half on a "Hail Mary" 56-yard TD pass from Brian Miller to Doug Gabriel. Gabriel caught the ball inside Syracuse's 10-yard line and made his way into the end zone.
