FORT COLLINS, Colorado (Ticker) -- Larry Ned rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns as San Diego State opened Mountain West Conference play with a 14-7 road victory over defending champion Colorado State.

Ned opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run with 8:14 remaining in the opening quarter and gave San Diego State (1-2, 1-0 MWC) a 14-0 lead with a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 9:47 left in the game.

Ned posted his eighth career 100-yard game.

Colorado State (1-2, 0-1) halved the deficit on Bradlee Van Pelt's 48-yard touchdown pass to Pete Rebstock with 7:53 to go.

The Rams, who began the season ranked 24th in both major polls, had two possesions to tie the game but were unable to get past midfield either time.

The Aztecs' defense limited Colorado State to nine first downs and just 93 yards rushing. San Diego State held a 370-212 edge in total offense.

The quarterback tandem of Lon Sheriff and Adam Hall combined to complete 17-of-25 passes for 200 yards for San Diego State, which improved to 6-2 in conference play on the road in the last three seasons.

The game featured 19 punts, including 10 by Colorado State's Joey Huber.
