HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Houston defensive end Adrian Lee said he would rather face starting quarterback Chris Simms than backup Major Applewhite. Simms forced him to rethink that assessment. Simms passed for 311 yards and three touchdowns as sixth-ranked Texas cruised to a 53-26 romp over Houston for its best start in seven years. Simms completed 20-of-35 passes in his second career 300-yard game. The 6-5 lefthander gave Texas (3-0) a 17-14 lead with eight seconds left in the second quarter when he found Tony Jeffery in the right corner of the end zone from 17 yards out. Ivan Williams carried 19 times for 104 yards for the Longhorns, who are 3-0 for the first time since 1994. After Houston fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Dusty Mangum booted a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give Texas a 20-14 advantage. Simms directed two scoring drives in the third quarter as Williams had a pair of one-yard plunges to stretch the lead to 33-14. Kelly Robertson was 20-of-33 for 364 yards and three TDs for the Cougars (0-2), who have lost the last six meetings with Texas. The Longhorns scored on five consecutive possessions, with the final one a one-yard reception by tight end Brock Edwards to stretch the bulge to 40-14 five seconds into the fourth quarter. A missed 36-yard field goal by Mangum ended the streak and Robertson threw an 80-yard scoring pass to Brandon Middleton with 9:53 to go. Applewhite replaced Simms and hooked up with tight end Bo Scaife for a three-yard score with 5:21 remaining. Joffery Reynolds cut the deficit to 47-26 with a two-yard run and Cedric Benson's two-yard TD capped the scoring in the final minute. Texas jumped out to a 10-0 lead when B.J. Johnson caught a pass near midfield and raced up the left sideline for a 92-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. Robertson tossed a 38-yard pass to Reynolds less than two minutes later to get Houston on the board, then capped a 12-play, 47-yard drive with a three-yard pass to tight end Grover Thompson to give the Cougars a 17-14 edge 79 seconds into the second quarter.
