NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Lew Thomas rushed for a pair of one-yard touchdowns in the third quarter as Vanderbilt posted its first win of the season by rallying for a 28-22 victory over Division I-AA Richmond. Thomas' TDs gave Vanderbilt (1-2) a 28-16 lead before Richmond (0-2) made it close on Scott Fulton's three-yard TD scamper with 4:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Commodores opened with losses to Middle Tennessee State and Alabama. Both of Richmond's losses have come to Division I-A opponents. The Spiders suffered a 17-16 setback to Virginia on September 1. Richmond grabbed a 16-7 lead Saturday on a one-yard TD run by Sean Gustus with 4:06 remaining in the first half. But Vanderbilt closed to 16-14 and gained momentum on Greg Zolman's second TD pass to Dan Stricker, a 12-yarder with 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Richmond jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first period on Gustus' four-yard TD run and Doug Kirchner's 31-yard field goal. Vanderbilt got on the board on Zolman's 41-yard TD pass to Stricker with four seconds left in the opening quarter. Zolman completed 20-32 for 236 yards, while Thomas rushed for 93 yards on 15 carries. Gustus completed 6-of-14 for 125 yards and also run for 54 yards on 18 attempts. Richmond, which faced Vanderbilt for the first time, dropped to 0-12 all time against the Southeastern Conference.
