PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Jason Gesser passed for 432 yards and four touchdowns as Washington State remained undebeaten with a 51-20 pounding of California in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both schools. Gesser completed 19-of-41 passes and was intercepted once as Washington State (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10) improved to 14-5-1 against the Golden Bears since 1979. Gesser tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Riley to tie the score, 13-13, with 7:46 remaining in the second quarter. Washington State passed for a school record 513 yards, breaking its previous mark of 492 in the 1992 Copper Bowl. The Cougars took the lead for good, 16-13, when Drew Dunning kicked a 37-yard field goal with 1:56 left in the second quarter. Gesser hooked up with Nakoa McElrath for an 18-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 23-13 just over three minutes into the third quarter. Mike Bush had a 47-yard TD reception to make it 30-13 with 8:49 to go in the third. Gesser again hooked up with McElrath for a four-yard TD and 37-13 advantage with 3:23 remaining in the third. McElrath had nine receptions for 163 yards and Bush caught five passes for 144 yards. Washington State had three receivers surpass the 100-yard mark in a single game for the first time in school history. Riley had 124 yards on just three catches. Kyle Boller was 10-of-27 for 161 yards for California (0-3, 0-1). Boller tossed a 45-yard scoring pass to Arnold Charon to give the Golden Bears a 7-3 lead with nine minutes left in the opening quarter. Mark Jensen kicked a 45-yard field goal with 5:43 left in the first to push the lead to 10-3. Jensen added a 20-yard field goal 5:11 into the second to make it 13-6. California did not score again until Boller thew a 15-yard pass to running back Terrell Williams early in the fourth quarter. Dave Minnich and Allen Thompson ran for Washington State's final two scores in the fourth. The Golden Bears have not won in Washington State since 1979.
