IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- The wait continues for Penn State's Joe Paterno, who for the third straight game failed to tie Bear Bryant as the winning coach in NCAA Division I-A history. The Nittany Lions dropped to 0-3 for the first time since 1983 following a 24-18 Big Ten Conference loss to Iowa. Paterno entered the season needing only one win to tie Bryant's mark of 322 victories, but Penn State has sputtered on offense all season. After suffering losses to Miami (33-7) and Wisconsin (18-6), the Nittany Lions were held to just 194 total yards against the Hawkeyes. Iowa (3-0, 1-0 Big 10) opened a 14-3 lead on touchdown runs of two and one yards by Ladell Betts, who rushed for 95 yards on 33 carries. After Penn State recorded a safety, the Hawkeyes built a 21-5 halftime cushion on Kyle McCann's seven-yard TD pass to Kahlil Hill with 25 seconds left in the half. McCann completed 16-of-25 for 225 yards. The Nittany Lions got their only offensive touchdown on Zack Mills' 10-yard strike to Bryant Johnson with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. After Nate Keading kicked a 47-yard field goal two minutes into the final period, Penn State's Larry Johnson returned a blocked punt 15 yards to complete the scoring with three minutes remaining. Penn State was held to just 33 yards on the ground, while Mills completed 17-of-31 for only 118 yards. Iowa cut Penn State's lead in the all-time series to 10-6. The Hawkeyes posted a 26-23 double overtime victory last season in Beaver Stadium.
