LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Mississippi showed little rust from a three-week layoff, rolling to a 42-31 Southeastern Conference victory over Kentucky. Eli Manning completed 19-of-36 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels, who had not played since a 27-21 loss to Auburn on September 8. Mississippi's contest against Vanderbilt on September 15 was postponed due to the terrorists attacks of four days earlier and the Rebels were off last week. Saturday's win assured Mississippi (2-1, 1-1 SEC West) its 13th straight non-losing September. The Rebels featured a balanced attack, rushing for 229 yards, led by Joe Gunn, who ran for 113 yards on 13 carries. Mississippi fell three yards shy of 500 total yards. Toward Sanford rushed for just eight yards on five carries for the Rebels, but scored on three one-yard touchdown runs. The Rebels took the lead for good, 21-14, on Manning's five-yard TD strike to Omar Rayford with 3:57 remaining in the first half. Mississippi went up, 28-14, on Sanford's second one-yard TD run 1:32 into the third quarter. Kentucky (1-3, 0-2 West) answered quickly, needing only 22 seconds to close to 28-21 on Artose Pinner's 66-yard TD gallop. South Carolina regained its 14-point cushion on Chris Collins' 38-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter. Shane Boyd and Jared Lorenzen struggled through the air, combined for just 104 yards for Kentucky. But the Wildcats did not go quietly, closing to 35-31 on Seth Hanson's 31-yard field goal with 7:39 to play in the contest. The Rebels clinched the win on Sanford's third TD 3 1/2 minutes later. Boyd completed 7-of-20 for 72 yards and Lorenzen was 5-of-13 for just 32 yards.
