COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Maryland remained unbeaten under first-year coach Ralph Friedgen as Bruce Perry rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown in a 32-20 victory over West Virginia. Maryland improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1996 and just the second time since 1978. Friedgen joined H.C. "Curley" Byrd as the only Maryland coaches to open their first seasons with four wins. Byrd accomplished the feat in 1912. Perry, who leads the nation in rushing, carried 31 times and raised his season total to 678 yards. He is averaging nearly 170 yards per game. Maryland took the lead for good, 19-13, on linebacker Mike Whaley's 52-yard fumble return with 2:15 remaining in the first half. Shaun Hill tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Guilian Gary to make it 25-13 with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Shawn Terry returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, but Maryland clinched the victory on Hill's one-yard TD run with 12:11 remaining in the contest. Hill completed 13-of-32 for 192 yards for the Terrapins, who cut West Virginia's lead in the all-time series to 19-18-2. Brad Lewis completed 31-of-53 for 279 yards for the Mountaineers (2-2), but threw four interceptions. Avon Cobourne rushed for 128 yards on 31 carries.
