SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Syracuse apparently has found its offense after losing to two of college football's powerhouses. Troy Nunes returned from a hamstring injury to complete 17-of-27 for 296 yards and four touchdowns as Syracuse continued its resurgence with a 44-30 victory over East Carolina. Nunes suffered the injury against Central Florida on September 8 and missed last week's contest against Auburn. After scoring only 16 points in their first two games against Georgia Tech and Tennessee, the Orangeman (3-2) have totaled 94 in their last three contests, all victories. Nunes started in place of sophomore R.J. Anderson, who was diagnosed with the flu before the game. Early on, it appeared that Syracuse would coast to an easy victory as Nunes completed a three-yard TD pass to Maurice Jackson to give the Orangemen a 20-3 lead with 2:59 remaining in the first half. But East Carolina (2-2) answered with three straight touchdowns. The first came on David Garrard's three-yard toss to Corey Floyd that made it 20-10 at the intermission. Two minutes into the third quarter, Leonard Henry raced 66 yards to cut the deficit to 20-17. Henry rushed for 177 yards on 14 carries. His TD run was the longest allowed by Syracuse since 1998, when Michigan's Walter Cross also had a 66-yarder. East Carolina took a 24-20 lead two posessions later on Terrence Copper's nine-yard run. However, Syracuse grabbed a 29-24 lead entering the final period on Justin Sujansky's 43-yard field goal and Chris Davis's five-yard TD run. Once again, the Orangemen squandered the advantage as Gerrard drove the Pirates 80 yards in nine plays. East Carolina went up, 30-29, on Garrard's 29-yard TD pass to Marcus White with 12:22 remaining in the final quarter. Syracuse took the lead for good in the seesaw affair on James Mungro's six-yard TD run just under two minutes later. Garrard completed 17-of-34 for 192 yards and two interceptions.
