LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The last time Stanford opened a season with three straight wins, the late Jack Elway was its coach. Randy Fasani tossed two first-half touchdown passes as the Cardinal opened a 21-point lead and held on for a 21-16 Pac-10 Conference victory over Southern California. Stanford (3-0, 2-0 Pac-10) is off to its first 3-0 since 1986. In its first season under Pete Carroll, USC (1-3, 0-2) has suffered three straight losses by a combined 11 points. Last week, the Trojans were poised to end Oregon's home winning streak before suffering a 24-22 loss. USC tried to rally in the second half, but could not overcome a 21-0 halftime deficit. The Trojans closed to 21-10 in the third quarter on David Davis' 41-yard field goal and Sultan McCullough's eight-yard TD run. With 6:34 remaining in the game, cornerback Kris Richard returned Mike Biselli's blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown. But Carson Palmer's conversion pass failed and USC went three-and-out on its next possession before Stanford ran out the clock. Fasani completed 11-of-25 for 194 yards, while Kerry Carter paced the Cardinal on the ground with 79 yards on 23 carries. After Carter opened the scoring with a four-yard TD run midway through the first quarter, Fasani tossed TD passes of 34 yards to Luke Powelll and two yards to Brett Pierce in the second period. Palmer completed 22-of-42 for 240 yards, but also threw two interceptions and got little help from the running game as the Trojans rushed for just 28 yards on 24 carries. Stanford has won three straight against USC to cut the Trojans' lead in the all-time series to 53-24-3.
