SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Dameon Hunter and Adam Tate combined for 253 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Utah scored the final 23 points of the contest for a 37-16 victory over New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.

Hunter's 74-yard run set up his second touchdown of the game, a 1-yard plunge with 10:13 remaining. Tate capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive with an 8-yard TD run for the final margin.

Ryan Kaneshiro's 33-yard field goal gave Utah (3-1, 1-0 MWC) the lead for good at 17-16 with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Tate then broke away for a 46-yard touchdown run to extend the advantage to 23-16 just 72 seconds later.

Hunter rushed for a career-high 177 yards on 25 carries for his third consective 100-yard effort. Tate rushed 12 times for 76 yards as the Utes totaled 255 yards on the ground.

New Mexico (1-3, 0-1) trailed 14-7 at halftime and tied the game on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Casey Kelly to Dwight Counter just under two minutes into the second half. The Lobos took their lone lead, 16-14, on a safety with 8:52 left in the third.

Jarrod Baxter rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries, but Kelly was just 7-of-24 for 124 yards and one touchdown.
