NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Auburn's matchup with Vanderbilt was tougher than usual but produced the same result. In a Southeastern Conference game that featured three ties and no unanswered touchdowns, Damon Duval's 49-yard field goal with 2:58 reamining lifted the Tigers to their 10th straight victory over the Commodores, 24-21. Auburn has not lost a meeting with Vandervilt since 1955, posting six shutouts during the winning streak. In the previous three meetings, the Tigers outscored the Commodores, 78-17. Saturday's contest proved to be much more of a challenge for Auburn (3-1, 2-0 SEC) until Duval capped an eight-play, 24-yard drive with a long field goal to break a 21-21 tie. Vanderbilt tried to get into field-goal range on the ensuing possession, but turned the ball over on downs after driving 52 yards. The Commodores piled up 330 total yards in the losing effort, led by Lew Thomas, who ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Neither team had a lead larger than seven points as Duval's field goal provided the only unanswered points. Freshman Chris Williams capped Auburn's first drive with a 51-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead just 2:08 into the game. Vanderbilt (1-3, 0-2) tied it on a four-yard touchdown run by Thomas with 8:43 left in the third quarter and Tigers' freshman quarterback Jason Campbell connected with Robert Johnson on a 35-yard pass in the end zone just 71 seconds later for a 14-7 lead. Campbell completed 17-of-24 for 147 yards and was not intercepted. He also rushed nine times for 57 yards. The Commodores tied it again on a two-yard run by Thomas with less than four minutes to go in the third before Auburn reclaimed the lead on a one-yard run by Williams with 50 seconds left. Williams' two touchdown runs gained 52 yards while his other four carries combined for only four. Dan Stricker capped an 83-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth qaurter as Vanderbilt pulled even for the last time.
