ATHENS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Antwon McCray and Tavares Bolden showed there is more to Toledo than Chester Taylor. McCray rushed for three touchdowns, including a pair in the fourth quarter, and Bolden passed for 387 yards and two scores as No. 23 Toledo escaped with a 48-41 victory over stubborn Ohio in the Mid-American Conference. A backup tailback, McCray carried 23 times for 72 yards and scored on a one-yard run with 1:32 left to cap a 12-play, 66-yard drive. He had tied the game on an 11-yard run earlier in the final period and scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter. The Rockets (5-0, 3-0 MAC West), who moved into the coaches' poll this week, remained unbeaten despite a sub-par outing from Taylor, a longshot candidate for the Heisman Trophy who was held to 50 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. Ohio (0-4, 0-2 East) remained winless despite yet another close call. Jamel Patterson had a pair of TD runs for the Bobcats, who came close to upsetting undefeated Iowa State before falling, 31-28, in their last game on September 22. Joe Sherrill gave Ohio its final lead at 41-34 on a two-yard run 4:55 into the fourth quarter before McCray tied it less than three minutes later with his 11-yard run. Toledo jumped to a 10-0 lead after one quarter on a 42-yard field goal by Todd France and a seven-yard TD run by Taylor. Ohio moved ahead with two scores in the first 2:08 of the second quarter. Patterson scored on a seven-yard run and safety Joe Sellers returned a fumble eight yards to the end zone. Toledo jumped back in front with three touchdowns in a 6:39 span of the second quarter. The Rockets first regained the lead at 17-14 on a five-yard TD pass from Bolden to Chris Holmes. Bolden followed with a 43-yard TD to Carl Ford and McCray scored on a two-yard run. Bolden completed 19-of-39 passes and was not intercepted. Ohio's Kevin Kerr stemmed the tide with a 55-yard field goal that cut the halftime deficit to 31-17. France kicked a 45-yard field goal early in the third quarter before Ohio scored 24 straight points. The Bobcats closed the quarter with a 15-yard run by Patterson, a six-yard TD run by Chad Brinker and a 30-yard field goal by Kerr to make it 34-34. Brinker carried 11 times for 73 yards. Ohio kept it close although it was outgained by a 536-301 margin.
