PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Syracuse avoided an embarrassing loss at Rutgers for the second time in three years as running back James Mungro caught a two-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 to play for a 24-17 victory.

On an afternoon that featured ugly play at times by both Big East Conference schools, Syracuse came away with its fourth straight victory when Mungro capped an eight-play, 62-yard drive with his seventh TD of the season.

The Orangemen (4-2, 1-0 Big East) defeated the Scarlet Knights (1-4, 0-3) for the 14th time in 15 meetings while avenging that only loss, a 24-21 setback two seasons ago. Syracuse entered that contest as nearly a 30-point favorite.

In an sloppy game, quartertbacks R.J. Anderson of Syracuse and freshman Ryan Cubit of Rutgers combined for a total of 26 completions. Anderson was a miserable 7-of-17 for 100 yards, while Cubit was 19-of-34 for 224 yards.

The Orangemen, who held a 454-418 total yards advantage, held a 5-3 lead after one quarter but extended their advantage to 17-5 with 96 seconds seconds left in the third on Kyle Johnson's six-yard TD run.

Rutgers tied it on a 19-yard TD scamper by Ravon Anderson and Cubit's 10-yard scoring strike to Delrico Fletcher. After both touchdowns, the Scarlet Knights failed to convert the extra point.

That took the pressure off the Orangemen, who were able to navigate the field in the final minutes locked in a tie game instead of facing a deficit. Johnson's 32-yard run to the Rutgers' 23-yard line on the second play of Syracuse's game-winning march set up the TD strike from Anderson to Mungro Rutgers got the ball back and moved to the Syracuse 36 before safety Keeon Walker intercepted Cubit in the end zone on the game's final play.
