DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Tarence Williams and Fred Staton combined for more than 200 yards on the ground as Wake Forest held on for a 42-35 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over winless Duke. Williams rushed for 121 yards on 25 carries and Staton added 99 yards on 18 attempts. They each scored a pair of touchdowns. Wake Forest (3-3, 1-3) appeared to be in control after opening a 28-0 halftime deficit, but the Blue Devils tied the contest, 35-35, on D. Bryant's second one-yard touchdown run with 11:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Demon Deacons responded by driving 67 yards on 10 plays and regained the lead on Staton's five-yard TD run with 7:05 left. Bryant completed 21-of-36 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, but could not prevent Duke (0-6, 0-4) from suffering its 18th consecutive defeat, the longest current losing streak in Division I-A. James MacPherson completed 12-of-20 for 144 yards and a touchdown for Wake Forest, which snapped a three-game slide. Wake Forest opened the scoring on MacPherson's 35-yard TD pass to John Stone with 9:11 left in the first quarter, then stretched its advantage to 21-0 on short TD runs by Staton and Williams. Williams added a two-yard TD run with 8:01 left in the second quarter to give Wake Forest its 28-0 halftime lead. But Duke scored three touchdowns in the final 4:26 of the third quarter to cut into a 35-7 deficit. Bryant tossed a seven-yard TD pass to Ben Erdeljac, Anthony Roberts returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown just 41 seconds later and Chris Douglas scored on an 11-yard run with 53 seconds to go in the third.
