EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Whenever Iowa scored, Herb Haygood had an answer.

Haygood had a touchdown catch and a kickoff return for a score in a wild second quarter as Michigan State held on for a 31-28 Big Ten Conference victory over Iowa.

Haygood, a senior flanker, had a huge game. In addition to his kickoff return, he had nine catches for 119 yards and one carry for six yards.

Jeff Smoker threw for 179 yards and two TDs for the Spartans (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten), who handed the Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-2) their second straight loss after a 3-0 start.

Michigan State never trailed, opening a 14-0 lead in the first 10 minutes on a six-yard TD run by T.J. Duckett and a 13-yard scoring toss from Smoker to Charles Rogers. Duckett gained 71 yards on 25 carries and Smoker completed 14-of-20 passes.

A one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kyle McCann, who was 22-of-41 for 220 yards and four interceptions, cut the deficit to 14-7 and began a 35-point second period.

Haygood capped an 80-yard march with a 15-yard TD reception. A fumble by Michigan State set up McCann's three-yard TD toss to Chris Oliver that made it 21-14 with 5:51 remaining, but Haygood brought back the ensuing kickoff 100 yards.

Another MSU fumble allowed Iowa to close to 28-21 on a one-yard TD run by Ladell Betts, who had 79 yards on 18 carries.

The defenses stiffened after halftime, with Dave Rayner kicking a 22-yard field goal for the Spartans and McCann scored from a yard out with six seconds to play. Iowa's Nate Kaeding missed a crucial 36-yard field goal with 2:33 to play.

Defensive tackle Josh Shaw and cornerback Broderick Nelson each had two interceptions for Michigan State, which improved to 8-8-1 all-time at home vs. Iowa.
