CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jeff Reed booted three field goals and Dexter Reid returned an interception for a touchdown as North Carolina defeated Virginia, 30-24, in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. The Tar Heels (4-3, 3-1, ACC) won for the fourth straight time, their longest winning streak since 1997. North Carolina beat Virginia for the first time in their last four meetings and lead the series, 56-46-4. The Tar Heels moved into sole possession of second place in the ACC, one game behind surprising Maryland. Reed kicked field goals of 30, 22 and 38 yards. The latter two came in the third quarter and early in the fourth, giving the Tar Heels a 23-17 advantage. The Cavaliers gained 34 yards on three plays, when quarterback Matt Schaub's pass bounced off the shoulder of Kase Luzar into the arms of Reid, who returned it 67 yards to make it 30-17. Schaub threw his third touchdown pass of the day to Billy McMullen with 1:01 left in the game to complete the scoring. McMullen caught 11 passes for 122 yards. Schaub completed 33-of-54 passes for 334 yards with one interception for Virginia (3-3, 2-2). Tyree Foreman and Michael McGrew scored on touchdown passes of seven and four yards, respectively, for the Cavaliers. The Tar Heels opened the scoring in the first quarter on a seven-yard run by Andre' Williams, who rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries. North Carolina standout defensive end Julius Peppers had three tackles, including two sacks.
