PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Washington State continues to pile up points as well as wins.

Jason Gesser threw a pair of touchdown passes, including an 11-yarder to Mike Bush in the fourth quarter, to give the surprising Cougars a 45-39 Pac-10 Conference victory over 22nd-ranked Stanford.

Washington State has won its first six games for the first time since 1997, when Ryan Leaf led the Cougars to a Rose Bowl appearance against Michigan.

The Cougars (6-0, 4-0 Pac-10) now turn to Gesser, who put his team ahead to stay with his TD pass to Bush that made it 42-39 with 8:22 left. Gesser completed 15-of-28 for 178 yards with two TDs and one interception.

As was the case with Leaf, the Cougars employ a creative offense under Mike Price. That was demonstrated late in the first quarter when Collin Henderson threw a 62-yard TD pass to Bush on a halfback option.

The Cougars have scored at least 34 points every game and are averaging 42.5 this season. The defense and special teams contributed to that total on Saturday.

Jeremy Bohannon recovered a blocked punt by Josh Moen in the end zone to give the Cougars a 28-21 lead in the second quarter. Later in the period, safety Billy Newman intercepted a screen pass from Randy Fasani and raced 54 yards for a score.

Stanford (3-1, 2-1 Pac-10), which was off its best start in 15 years, received a huge game from Brian Allen, who carried 20 times for 133 yards and three scores.

Allen scored on runs of 17 in the first quarter and one and 27 yards in the third.

Fasani completed 16-of-31 passes for 202 yards with two TDs and one interception.
