PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- Put UCLA in the national title picture and DeShaun Foster in the middle of the Heisman Trophy race.

Foster ran for a school-record 301 yards and four touchdowns as seventh-ranked UCLA raced to a 21-point lead and coasted to a 35-13 Pac-10 Conference victory over No. 8 Washington.

UCLA (5-0, 2-0 Pac-10) was off last week after routing Oregon State on September 29 and was eager to get back to work. It showed on Saturday with Foster scoring on runs of five and 21 yards in the first 9:08.

Foster, who carried 31 times, broke the Bruins' record of 274 yards, set by Theotis Brown against Oregon in 1978. Foster added a one-yard TD in the third quarter and capped his brilliant day with a 92-yard run in the fourth, the second-longest rushing play from scrimmage in UCLA history behind a 93-yard jaunt by Chuck Cheshire in 1934.

"We wanted to come out and get a good start. We wanted to show America we were able to run the ball and throw the ball," Foster said. "We tried to establish a running game and we kept pounding at the defense. You don't see too many guys hit 300 yards in college. It was great to do that against a top team."

The four rushing touchdowns tied a school record.

Washington (4-1, 2-1 Pac-10) could not get its offense in gear in the absence of quarterback Cody Pickett, who suffered a separated shoulder in last week's win over Southern California.

The Huskies had a 12-game winning streak snapped and were defeated for the first time since a 23-16 loss at Oregon last season.

"I told the players going into to the game, it was like a 15-round fight against the champion," UCLA coach Bob Toledo said. "They're the defending champion and to be champion you need to knock them out and we did that."

The Bruins have won 14 of their last 18 games against ranked opponents.

"I think we showed the country that we had a good football team today," Toldo added.

Taylor Barton started for Washington and completed 22-of-44 passes for 316 yards with an interception. He lost two fumbles, but threw a 39-scoring pass to Todd Elstrom in the second quarter.

UCLA turned in another strong defensive effort and has yielded just 60 points in five games. Washington managed 16 yards on the ground and its leading rusher was Omare Lowe, who scrambled for 24 yards out of punt formation.

Linebacker Robert Thomas had 12 tackles, including 11 solo.

"I had 10 other guys out there who gave me the confidence to play," Thomas said.

Special teams also contributed for UCLA when Jinril Raymo returned a block punt six yards for a score to make it 21-0 with 2:08 left in the first quarter.

Wiillie Hurst had a one-yard TD run for Washington in the final period.

"We were trying to find a way to get back into the game but we didn't well play enough to get back in the game," Washington coach Rick Neuheisel said. "It's upsetting because I thought we were ready to play. I was pleased with our fight, but we have to figure out how to be sucessful."

Cory Paus of UCLA completed 9-of-19 passes for 128 yards. Brian Poli-Dixon caught four passes for 69 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with a sprained left shoulder.
