MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Marion Barber ran for 158 yards and two scores as Minnesota grinded out a 28-19 victory over Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference. Tellis Redmon added 134 yards on 22 carries and a score for the Golden Gophers (1-5, 0-4), who collected 322 of their 446 total yards on the ground to snap a three-game losing streak. The Spartans (3-2, 1-2) took their final lead of the game at 17-14 when Jeff Smoker threw an 18-yard TD pass to Charles Rogers midway through the third quarter. The Golden Gophers answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a six-yard TD run by Redmon midway through the final period. Michigan State turned the ball over on downs near midfield when Smoker threw an incomplete pass to Herb Haygood. Minnesota capitalized and put away the game on Asad Abdul-Khaliq's 39-yard TD pass to Barber, who also scored on a 40-yard run in the first half that tied the game, 7-7. Smoker completed 21-of-33 passes for 258 yards and two scores. He opened the scoring with a five-yard TD pass to Chris Baker. Asad Abdul-Khaliq completed 11-of-23 passes for 124 yards, including a four-yard TD pass to Ron Johnson in the second quarter that put the Gophers ahead, 14-10.
