PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- Sixth-ranked UCLA let winless California hang around for almost one half but continued its third-quarter dominance and cruised to a 56-17 Pac-10 Conference romp. One week after setting a school record with 301 rushing yards, DeShaun Foster ran for 117 yards and scored three touchdowns as UCLA (6-0, 3-0) joined 18th-ranked Washington State as the only unbeaten teams in the Pac-10. Foster's one-yard plunge put the Bruins ahead, 14-10, with 5:47 left in the second quarter. Foster added a 34-yard TD reception 76 seconds before halftime to give UCLA a 21-10 advantage. Cory Paus was hit just as he released the ball, but Foster caught it in the middle of the field and raced up the left sideline into the end zone. "That pass was intended for DeShaun," Paus said. "I'd like it to look better, but sometimes you've got to be lucky. The way they were playing with nine guys in the box it's hard to run, so we had to run the ball." The Bruins scored on their first possession of the second half with Ryan Smith's 27-yard reception stretching the lead to 28-10. Freshman running back Taylor Llewellyn blocked a punt and wide receiver Devon Reese returned it 16 yards for a score with 6:22 to play in the third quarter. "Corey had his best game of the year," UCLA coach Bobn Toledo said. "They did some things differently than they had done before. We made some adjustments in the second quarter and we were able to make some big plays. They had eight of nine guys in the box and when you try to take away a back like DeShaun Foster sometimes you pay for it and Paus made them pay dearly." Paus hooked up with Ed Ieremia-Stansbury for a four-yard touchdown that pushed the bulge to 42-10 with 3:36 left in the period. UCLA has outscored its opponents, 72-0, in the third quarter this season. Foster carried 24 times and his 42 career touchdowns are two more than Gaston Green for second place on UCLA's all-time list. Skip Hicks of the Chicago Bears holds the record with 55. "Their defense played well in the first half, then we wore them down," Foster said. "We'll probably get into a shootout with Stanford next week." Eric Holtfreter completed 11-of-29 passes for 102 yards for California (0-6, 0-3), which has lost nine straight games and is off to the worst start in its 119-year history. All of the Golden Bears' opponents were undefeated and those teams are now a combined 35-3. "We wanted to hit the quarterback in the first half and we did that," California coach Tom Holmoe said. "Basically in the second half their skill level took over. From our perspective we were right there for almost a half. Then they made a big play and that was the turning point of the game. Our defense swarmed in the first half and slowed down their run, but we couldn't maintain that intensity in the second half they wore us down." Starting quarterback Kyle Boller, a native of nearby Valencia who led California to upset wins over UCLA each of the previous two years, sat out with a back injury. Paus completed 13-of-16 passes for a season-high 373 yards as the Bruins improved to 46-24-1 all-time against California. Paus was sacked twice in the first series and four times in the first half as the Golden Bears stacked the defensive line. Foster capped a six-play, 75-yard drive with a six-yard run to give the Bruins a 49-10 lead five seconds into the fourth quarter. Akil Harris had a 48-yard TD to make it 56-10 with 4:22 left. Freshman Terrell Williams had a four-yard touchdown run with one second left.
