EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Antwaan Randle El became the all-time rushing leader among quarterbacks but he was not the only one running wild against 23rd-ranked Michigan State on Saturday. Randle El ran for 149 yards and a touchdown and Levron Williams carried 26 times for 251 yards and three scores as Indiana stunned Michigan State, 37-28, in a Big Ten Conference matchup. Randle El has 3,645 rushing yards in his four-year career and moved past Ohio University's Kareem Wilson (3,597) and Air Force's Dee Dowis (3,612) to become the leading rusher in Division I-A history. He already is the only player to run for 40 touchdowns and throw for 40 scores. "It means a lot but at the same time I'm taking it in stride and staying humble about it because I would trade it all in to go to a bowl," Randle El said. "I'm going to celebrate a little bit tonight like any normal person would." "They're what I call part of our best 11," Indiana coach Cam Cameron said. "It's not always the 11 best. It's the best of 11. There's a huge difference between the two." Indiana (3-5, 3-3) was clinging to a 31-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter when Williams sealed the contest with a 22-yard run with 2:20 remaining. "These guys really played well," Michigan State Bobby Williams said. "Randle El is a very good quarterback and Levron is a good running back. They did their job today." Michigan State (5-3, 3-3) gave back nearly everything it had earned with a thrilling win over rival Michigan last week. The Spartans, who led 21-14 midway through the second quarter, committed three turnovers and had nine penalties. "We made too many mistakes today, too many for us to overcome," Bobby Williams said. "We had a chance to do some things today but we just couldn't overcome the mistakes. We had far more penalties than we've had in several weeks." Michigan State's T.J. Duckett had 98 yards on 17 carries and Spartans quarterback Jeff Smoker was 20-of-30 for 288 yards. Herb Haygood caught eight of those passes for 132 yards and two scores. "We started slow today and just couldn't finish in the end," Duckett said. "I really can't say too much. ... They played a great game, I can't take anything away from them. We just couldn't match up with them." "We did not play well today," Haygood said. "We left too many plays on the field. We should not have lost this game." Indiana snapped a five-game losing streak to the Spartans, who have lost just 14 of 50 meetings (34-14-2) with the Hoosiers. Indiana broke on top when Randle El broke free for a 57-yard scoring run. It was the second longest run of his career, second only to a 62-yard scoring burst on November 11, 2000. Duckett scored on a 17-yard run and Smoker found Haygood with an 18-yard scoring strike 2 1/2 minutes apart midway through the opening quarter to give Michigan State a 14-7 lead. The Spartans still held a 21-14 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to go when fullback Jeremi Johnson capped a seven-play, 60-yard drive with a 19-yard run. With the game tied, Levron Williams put the Hoosiers ahead for good with an 80-yard touchdown run with 2:11 left in the half. The 80-yard scoring run put Williams over 1,000 yards for the season and the 200-yard effort was his third of the season. Not looking for excuses, Bobby Williams did offer that the Spartans were hard-pressed to compete defensively with four starters injured. "We've been hit with injuries all season long," he said. "They finally caught up with us today. We had a lot of young players in there, several true freshmen." After a 31-yard field goal by Adam Braucher 72 seconds into the second half, Smoker found Haygood again with a 13-yard score that got the Spartans within 31-28. Bobby Williams opted for a fake field goal with 12 minutes to go that backfired and Michigan State was unable to push across a tying or go-ahead score. Indiana ran for 489 yards -- the most allowed by the Spartans since Nebraska ran up 552 on September 9, 1995 "Certain games you're going to throw it a lot," Cameron said. "Certain games you're going to run it a lot. We're going to take what the defense is going to give us." "As we went along, we went with the run because that's what they gave us," Randle El concluded. "If I have the chance to run it I'm going to run it. And if they give us the run, we're going to run it all day."
